Who Should Attend

Clinicians who work with adolescent abuse survivors in group settings

Description

The prevalence of violence in girls' and boys' lives is great, and many teenagers today struggle with the sequelae of trauma: low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, stress, shame, anger/hostility, low academic performance, concentration trouble, substance abuse, various risky behaviors, and the likelihood of revictimization.

This training will prepare clinicians to implement the G-TREM and B-TREM approach of group work with adolescent abuse survivors. Clinicians will learn how this group was developed: its rationale, process, philosophy, and context. They will learn the group format, and all session topics will be reviewed. Leader techniques will be taught through role play in mock groups. Participants will learn about the use of experiential exercises in a psychoeducationally structured group format, as several of the exercises will be demonstrated.

The G-TREM approach is a 16-session group intervention, and B-TREM intervention is a 12-session group. Both groups have as their goals: 1) enhance key trauma recovery and coping skills such as self-protection, self-soothing, emotional modulation, maintaining interpersonal boundaries, and developing relational mutuality; 2) decrease risk of revictimization; and 3) strengthen the adolescents' overall functioning. It is based on the Trauma Recovery and Empowerment (TREM) model for adult women, which was originally developed at Community Connections and studied during the five-year SAMHSA Women with Co-Occurring Disorders and Violence Multi-Site Study.
