Clinicians who work with LGBTQ+ individuals
Description
Members of the LGBTQ+ community process life differently. Many of their experiences are seen through the rainbow lens of being part of the LGBTQ+ community. Each member of the community has different experiences. We recognize this and seek to reach the greater community's needs, while also acknowledging each person's uniqueness. Their trauma might be similar to those of straight people, but we respond to them differently as members of the LGBTQ+ community. Trauma survivors often see themselves and their lives as different from everyone else's, but as an LGBTQ+ individual, the "differentness" is even more accentuated. These individuals have often not been accepted by their families or community. Their trauma might have originated in the family and then was compounded by the non-acceptance of who they are. Or sometimes their trauma was centered around their sexuality and gender. Not only were they often emotionally, physically, and sexually abused, but then they were told they deserved the abuse even more because of their sexuality and gender.
This training prepares clinicians to implement the fully manualized, 18-session LGBTQ+ TREM approach to group work with abuse survivors. Participants learn the group's rationale and process (including a range of cognitive-behavioral and psychoeducational interventions), as well as each session's content. Leader techniques are taught through role-play in mock groups. Trainers also provide consultation about adaptations of LGBTQ+ TREM for specific settings.
